Ahh, Ahh, AAACHOO!! The Common Cold…

It sneaks up on you, out of the blue the crud catches you and ACHOO!!! Don’t you love that 3 am wake up call of a sore throat? You roll over and snuggle deeply into your warm cushy bed. Just as you are about to drift back to sleep you swallow, well you try to and you cannot seem to get a good hard push down your esophagus. GASP! Your throat hurts, the dread washes over your body, on no, you have a cold!

To keep it real I figured I should tell you what happens to me when I get sick, since I am always telling people how awesome natural healing and meds work! Unfortunately as awesome as all the stuff I take is, I still get sick! Saturday morning I was welcomed at 3am with a sore, tight throat. I am not one who can get that wake up call and drift dreamily back to sleep. I fight sleep the rest of the night. First I get up and take a huge dose of vitamins and start my homeopathy. Then I get back into bed and do the toss and turn dance. Part of my problem is anxiety, how will I take care of my family if I am feeling yucky? What if I pass it to my kids, what if my Hubs gets it? I feel doomed and hopeless till I fall back asleep. Thankfully I wake up with my throat feeling almost 100%, thanks to the homeopathy! I continue to take the homeopathy and vitamins, down water and rest the entire weekend.

I do not believe in the over the counter medicines. I have given it to Hubs if he gets sick and has a very crazy work day ahead of him but that is a rare occasion. I feel as if taking that stuff makes a cold last 10x longer! I think it stops the bodies ability to work to it’s fullest potential. I need to feel good, when sick, so that’s why I love the homeopathy. Now Ill tell you, first hand, how well the homeopathy works. So far since Saturday morningI have been taking the homeopathy regularly. For the most part I have had a little tiredness, sinus pain and pressure. I will take an ibuprofen if the pressure is to much to handle but so far I have only taken one on Saturday morning. I took the one Ibuprofen because I did not have the sinus homeopathy pills which I got later that day. I will say that I am still slightly miserable but I feel as though I have been taking over the counter medicine with out the “drugged” up feeling. I am also confident that my cold will be much shorter then the average cold. Today, Monday, I feel my cold is almost over, I may have one or two more days that I am not 100%. That is 4-5 days that I will feel slightly miserable! The common cold typically lasts 7-10 days! This is why I am a huge believer in homeopathy, vitamins and another secret weapon, elderberry! You can learn about elderberry on a blog I am following click the blue link to read it, A Drizzle Of Oil A Pinch Of Salt.

I hope this motivates you to look into using more natural remedies. I truly believe that we have the power to heal ourselves without drugging ourselves silly! You can read more about Homeopathy HERE. Educate yourself, your body will thank you!

Stay Well and Strive For Progress!

  1. Hope you get to feeling better soon!! Honey and Lemon work great as well!! ;)

  2. Glad you are on the mend I will look into this stuff

  3. I SO agree!! Last fall, I caught one of the first colds of the season. I had not yet started taking my elderberry syrup because it was so early in the fall. HOWEVER, the morning I woke up not feeling well, I started the syrup, homeopathy, extra Vitamin D and Olive Leaf Extract. From that day until I was 100% over the cold was 5 days! AMAZING!! Prior to my using the above products, I would get a cold and it would usually take WEEKS to be over it! I would have a cough, sometimes for months! YES.. I DO believe in the power of homeopathy!

  4. I’m so glad to read I’m not the only one who struggles nearly as much with anxiety as cold symptoms when I get sick too. I had nearly that exact early morning wakeup last week. Did the same thing as you, dragged myself into the kitchen, pulled out my bin of vitamins and homeopathic remedies, made some hot honey lemon fresh ginger tea, used my neti pot and climbed on the couch to sleep sitting upright. I had one night of misery rather than night after night like I used to have when I was sick. And the headcold symptoms cleared up within 48 hours leaving me with a very manageable cough.

I discovered after switching to homeopathic meds that over the counter cold medicine really REALLY messes with me. It gives me megadoses of anxiety, makes me agitated, restless and paranoid. I always thought those were symptoms of cold and flu for me. As it turns out they were symptoms of my Nyquil and decongestant use. Some of my friends have had this problem when their toddlers turned into psychos on cold meds – like a 180 degree shift in personalities. Scary!

My colds/flu seem far less severe than they ever used to be. I believe that’s the beauty and speed of homeopathic meds, but I also believe it’s because I’m not adding more horrible symptoms onto my cold symptoms by taking over the counter cold meds.

Glad to hear you’re on the mend. My 1 lb bag of elderberries arrived from Mountain Rose Herbs on Friday. I will be making a batch of the elderberry syrup as soon as our current bottle is gone. :o )

    • PLEASE Share that tea recipe!!! Love hearing success stories thank you! :)

      • Oh it’s easy as can be! Johnny’s Korean grandma first made it for me and I couldn’t believe how delicious and soothing it was.

Approx. 1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger (it’s easy to peel it with the side of a spoon) smashed then minced – much the way I prepare garlic

One half of a washed lemon. Peel intact

Honey – enough to make the tea taste pleasantly sweet. I used to skimp on the honey, but have learned that a yummy sweet tea with plenty of honey soothes much better.

        Directions:

Bring water to a boil in teapot. While it’s heating up prepare ginger and lemon. Place ginger in teacup/mug and pour boiling water over it. After steeping for about 5 minutes squeeze the lemon into the cup and drop the rind into the tea as well. Add in honey until it’s yummy, sweet and soothing.

When I have a sore or scratchy throat I will chew on the ginger as I drink the tea. Feels lovely. :)

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I love it so much I will make it during the summer and chill it to drink as a refreshing lemonade. YUM!

  5. Especially with the kids, I do what I can to treat naturally. Loving the elderberry syrup and this batch I was able to get Belgrade raw honey!! I’m a big believer in honey in general and so glad both my girls are big enough to have it now. I also like the Hyland’s homeopathy for the kids. I haven’t taken much for myself (but I’m not a big medicine gal anyway). Maybe we can talk more at our coffee date….. :)

  6. We love elderberry!! Do you buy it or make your own?
