You run around in the morning, trying to keep the head on the chicken. Kids to feed and get out the door, dinner to plan, lipgloss to dab on and a hubby to kiss. Your mornings are probably the busiest time of day.
With all that craziness going on how are we supposed to feed our soul and spend time with God?
I have attempted different times of the day to see when devotions might work best. I tried right before bed but I always fall asleep praying. I tried late morning, but a phone call, text or even social media catches me first. I have even tried getting up super early, I wasn’t consistent enough.
When to study was only half of my problem.
I continually thought that I needed to spend at least 20-30 minutes in the word and in prayer to please God.
When and how long to spend time with God were keeping me from the vital “soul food” I needed!
When I start to fear I am letting God down, I always go back to one simple truth…
He’s my Father.
Think about this. Would you tell your kids if they didn’t spend at least 30 minutes talking to you everyday you would not love them anymore?
Would you tell your kids if they don’t read their Bible everyday they are going to hell?
Of course not! You love your kids, there is no way you would stop loving them or scare them like that!
Well guess what?
You are God’s child, he adores you. He would have your picture on the fridge if he had one. He would post pictures of all the amazing things you do on His Facebook wall.
God loves you for you. He for sure wouldn’t send you to hell or stop loving you because you didn’t meet with him for 30 mins!
He loves it when you give Him that time but he loves it when you give Him anytime time.
Sometimes we only have 5 minutes with our kids when we tuck them in to bed at night. Do they still adore us? Yes! Remember quality trumps quantity!
You are in a busy season of your life right now. Raising kids is time zapping but rewarding. God knows that!
So give God five minutes and he will bless you.
When I give time to my relationship with Him, my days are blessed. Yes, there are still challenges during the day. How else would he help me to learn, grow and depend on Him? Challenges are important to the health of our character.
So how do you spend 5 minutes of quality time with God?
- 1. Get up a few minutes earlier than usual.
- 2. Pick a book of the Bible. I usually suggest you start with the new testament. Maybe Ephesians or Corinthians?
- 3. Pray and ask God to bless your reading.
- 4. Read 1-5 verses a day. Don’t let yourself get carried away and read an entire chapter. Just read a few verses.
- 5. Pray. Praise Him, thank Him, offer your prayer requests and – this is KEY – ask him to Bless YOU!
Yes, bless you! You are his baby, of course he wants to bless you. I have found that since praying for blessing I am seeing the blessings in every day. It really makes me more optimistic about life!
Feeding your soul and developing your relationship with your Heavenly Father is not rocket science. God knows where you are at in your life. Someday you will have more time but for now 5 minutes is better than nothing.
