As I was cooking one day I started thinking about some of my favorite tools that I use in my kitchen. I tried to think of a few tools that I use on a regular basis that everyone might not have. I am going to share what tools I came up with and the many uses they have…
The Spider Skimmer
Horrible name for a kitchen tool, but one you must have! I have seen this tool in my Mama’s basket for as long as I can remember. I know other people own one but I never noticed it at anyone else’s house. The only time I ever saw her use this tool was when she made an occasional stir-fry in her wok. I would watch her scoop the veggies out with it. One day I noticed one of these in a kitchen store and it reminded me of my Mama’s kitchen. I instantly grabbed it, purchased it and when I got home plopped it in my utensil holder, where it sat unused but reminding me of my Mama.
I recently discovered the coolest use for my Spider Skimmer! Move over colanders! I watched Giada from The Food Network use this to take the noodles out of her boiling pot! Instantly I was intrigued, why wouldn’t she just dump the noodles in a colander and be done? As I waited patiently watching her I realized two things. The spider kept the noodles from breaking up and she took a ladle and poured some leftover water from the pot over her noodles. She said the starchy water made the noodles more creamy. WOW! I totally tried it and it worked amazingly! My noodles have never been creamier! I even use this when making mac and cheese from a box, the kids noticed a creamier texture. Do note that if you do this you add less milk to the cheese sauce. Plop a spider in your utensil basket and have perfect noodles forever more!
The Tablespoon Measure Cup
This little dandy is a hard worker in my kitchen! I do not know about you but I hate using a measuring spoon when it comes to measuring liquid. I always end up spilling, especially if one of my kids is helping me. I have TWO of these in my kitchen. I use this for oils, water, vanilla extract, milk, anything liquid in a recipe! Spillage be gone!
The Spoonula
I am sure if you are a cook or baker you own a spatula but have you ever tried the spoonula? This baby is fantastic! I love using this to scoop whip cream onto my waffles, muffin batter into the muffin pan! I also will use it in a case where I might have something like a chicken breast in the fry pan with bubbling tomato sauce, I’ll scoop the sauce over the chicken, kind of like basting. I love the small one for the smaller bowls like my food processor, it works great at getting under those blades! I suggest having a large and small one of these simple tools in your kitchen!
The Microplane
Need to add some ZEST to your kitchen?! Then add a Microplane to your tools! This gadget won’t let you down! I lOVE LOVE LOVE this one! Anything that can take the place of three tools in my kitchen is awesome! Thinks less stuff, less clutter! I use this for chocolate, citrus zest, ginger, GARLIC (thanks Rachel Ray!), hard cheeses like parmesan, nutmeg, and even for crafts like when needing to shave down a bar of soap! Once this is in your drawer you won’t know how you lived without it!
Silicone Tipped Tongs
I am sure most people have tongs and maybe even these tongs but I couldn’t leave them out! I love these things! They are your extra set of hands in the kitchen! I use these on the grill to flip my steaks and veggies. I use them to gently toss pasta. How about when marinating raw meat? Don’t want to get your hands dirty when you need to season the meat? I hate flipping the meat with my hands then having to wash before I can season them. GRAB YOUR TONGS! I also like to use these to pull waffles out of the iron, toss salad, and pinch my kiddo’s butts haha! Well that last one happens right before they go in the dishwasher hehe
Well there you have it! The five kitchen utensils you MUST get for your kitchen! I am hoping if you have these already you picked up a few more ideas on how to use them! You can find all of these tools in the amazon box to the right of this post under the “Item Mae Recommends” title. Do you have a favorite kitchen tool or use for one of the ones mentioned above?
