Kiddo Savvy: Parents Be Good To Your Children…

Have you ever listened to a song a thousand times without really listening to what it says? Then one day your conscious mind catches a few words which makes you wonder what the song is really about. I had that experience the other day when John Mayer’s song “Daughters” came on the radio. I have heard that song a million times but for some reason it really tugged at my soul this time. We have three daughters so this song really resonates with me. It’s not just about the daughters though, it’s sons and daughters. Parent’s be good to your children, they love like you do and they learn what you do.

Our kids are our future.  They are not “testing” you to upset you, they are testing you to see how they should live, act and be. Give them love, sunshine, healthy food, time and watch them flourish. One of the most amazing things about kids is how they force us to learn more about ourselves. Allow yourself to grow from the challenges and blessings of having kids. You will be enriched and very blessed by experiencing your kids’ lives with them.

Time shows LOVE to kids. Actions show them how to act and affect how they think. Be good to your kids, they will love like you do and they learn what you do. Do not worry about being what the world says is the “perfect” parent. It’s not the spotless house, number of activities they are in, how “good” they are in their class, how adorable and put together they look, that shows them love. It’s the mess in the kitchen that was left so you could read them a book, the papers you left piled on your office desk so you could have a tea party, the garage that is still a mess because ice skating with your favorite little fans sounded like more fun. Those are the things the kids see; kids learn they are more important to you than the daily chores. They will only be under your wings for a few years, make those the years that messes, work and daily tasks take the back burner (not completely off the burner). You can have a spotless house and every thing caught up at work when they are out on their own.  I am not saying let your home become a health hazard and your work suffer, they need to see you accomplish those things too. You have to eat and earn money. It is important to let them know that they are more important than the dishes, cleaning, and work.

I am writing this post to myself today because I am always concentrating on how much I have to get done. I let the precious moments of my babies lives slip through my hands. I forget to do the important things like read books, have tea parties and let them help me. My point is that it’s okay to enjoy your children and let them enjoy you. It’s okay to let the chores slide so you can spend time with your kiddos. It’s okay to ask them to help you even if it takes longer to get the chore done, they learn that way and they get that time with you. Parents be good to your children, they won’t be in your home for long. Someday I will look back while I am sitting in my spotless, boring house and wish it was messy, loud and full of life.  I hope you enjoy this song.

Go enjoy your kids!

Daughters

by John Mayer

I know a girl
She puts the color inside of my world
But she’s just like a maze
Where all of the walls are continually changed
And I’ve done all I can
To stand on her steps with my heart in my hands
Now I’m starting to see
Maybe it’s got nothing to do with me

Fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

Oh, you see that skin?
It’s the same she’s been standing in
Since the day she saw him walking away
Now she’s left
Cleaning up the mess he made

So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too

Boys, you can break
You’ll find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong
And boys soldier on
But boys would be gone without the warmth from
A womans good, good heart

On behalf of every man
Looking out for every girl
You are the guide and the weight of her world

So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too
