Yes it’s true! My house really cleans itself! Well mostly…
Our only house takes minutes, instead of hours or days, to clean. If you are a new reader let’s get a little bit better acquainted shall we? I am a mom who teaches homeschool, has three busy kids, one cat, one LARGE dog and we are looking to add one more puppy to the craziness! I also write this blog and help my husband with our financial website, and try to keep up with life in general. I am telling you this because my life is crazy busy and most of you who read this probably are too! Being busy doesn’t mean you are doomed to a messy house forever. If you commit to taking some time to clean out the clutter in your life then you will see how easy it is to keep your home tidy!
Many of you who are past readers or followers of my organizing category, “Savvy Home”, have seen the results from, “The House That Cleans Itself” by Mindy Starns Clark, book that I read. Some of you who have been with me since I started organizing my home haven’t seen all that has been accomplished. There is still a bit that needs to be done. This year I plan on starting the process again. I do not need to do everything the book says because I have done the huge purge once already. Now I need to go back over things and freshen up. As I do this I will be taking you back to where it was before I started any organizing. You will see the before, the now and the after. I will discuss the problem areas and the problem clutter in those specific areas. I hope you enjoy coming on these little home organizing journeys with me. I plan to post the Savvy Home posts on Wednesdays. You can also follow me on Pinterest or my At Home At Strive For Progress Pinterest board to find the posts.
Just recently a reader asked…
“I was just wondering about how long it took to work through your whole home [using The House That Cleans Itself]. Do you have any advice on when to work on it.”
I had to think about that one a bit. I believe it took me about two months to really get through every room, nook and cranny in our house. Our house was unorganized from the day before we moved in! I found out I was pregnant with our third kiddlet while we were renting a condo. A week after we found out about our bundle-to-be we bought a house. It took a month before we could close on our new home. In that month I had to pack our house with two little ones and a MAJOR case of morning sickness. It was awful! The morning sickness only increased over the following months. I had amazing friends and my parents who came in and helped me pack and unpack. I didn’t have time or energy to try to purge anything before we moved so it basically just got shoved wherever until I had the energy to go through it all. It was about three or four months after I had our baby when I found the book “The House That Cleans Itself” from a friend. I was desperate to try anything to get my house cleaned up. Hubby was on board to help, he was getting tired of spending hours on the weekend helping me clean up our mess. I followed the book word for word. It was difficult not take steps ahead but I wanted this to work so I followed her instructions exactly. I am so thankful we did! I am very pleased with how fast the house takes to clean up now!
My advice is that you should declare a start date, prep yourself and your family up for it. Remember as you work through this book some chaos will happen elsewhere in your life. I had to make quick and easy meals sometimes eating out a little more than we wanted. The laundry would pile up and the dishes would get bad. I had to let myself be okay with it because I knew the end results would make these moments of messy chaos disappear. I suggest you do a zone a week and work on it during all your free time. After one zone, if you are burnt out, take a week or two off then do the next zone. Make it workable for your family. Don’t tell yourself you have to have it done in a week. It took years to build up your current clutter. If you work on it 1-2 hours a day (or take a weekend and do as much as you can) you will be done in no time! This will be the best thing you ever do for your home and family life. When our house is at it’s messiest now it takes maybe one hour to clean up! When you are de-cluttered, organized and have a place for everything then there is no wondering where to put it. Clean up takes minutes! In fact just this last Christmas my kitchen drawers was driving me nuts. They were in need of some freshening up. Two hours before my family came over for dinner I de-cluttered them. It took me less than 15 minutes to clean them up! You can do this too! Get the book and start a journey that will change your living space into a workable, fun and relaxing home that will no longer stress you out. Come on, what are you waiting for?!
See you next Wednesday for our first post! I will be going through my coat closet and winter clothes. I can’t wait to “see” you there!
