The Baby Is Teething…

I had a question from a reader this week about natural ways to help with teething. Some of you Momma’s with babies may remember hearing about a “Hyland’s Teething Tablets” being recalled. Click on the below quote to see the actual FDA recall…

“FDA notified consumers that Hyland’s Teething Tablets is being recalled because the tablets may pose a risk to children. The tablets are manufactured to contain a small amount of belladonna, a substance that can cause serious harm at larger doses. For such a product, it is important that the amount of belladonna be carefully controlled. FDA laboratory analysis has found that Hyland’s Teething Tablets contain inconsistent amounts of belladonna FDA has received reports of serious adverse events in children taking this product that are consistent with belladonna toxicity. The FDA has also received reports of children who consumed more tablets than recommended, because the containers do not have child resistant caps.” -www.fda.gov

Hyland’s has brought back their tablets but if you are unsure of using them then move onto my favorite homeopathic brand. Boiron! I love this company and their products. I will continue to bring them up in health posts but today I will focus on their teething homeopathic oral medicine. I use it and it works great! It is a little tube of liquid that you put in baby’s mouth. My baby doesn’t mind it a bit and it usually only takes one or two before it starts working. It takes about 30 minutes for it to fully kick in.

While I am waiting for the Boiron to work I will rub Baby Orajel Natural’s (with clove) on her gums which gives immediate relief!

This is NOT to be confused with Orajel’s original teething relief gel which has benzocaine in it. Here is another FDA recall quote, click on the quote to be taken directly to the fda webpage providing the information…

“FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that FDA continues to receive reports of methemoglobinemia, a serious and potentially fatal adverse effect, associated with benzocaine products both as a spray, used during medical procedures to numb the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, and benzocaine gels and liquids sold over-the-counter and used to relieve pain from a variety of conditions, such as teething, canker sores, and irritation of the mouth and gums.” -www.fda.gov

So is the “medicine” and “gel” I recommend. In addition to that I like to use an amber teething necklace, which supposably release natural oils into the body that act as a pain reliever. Apparently they are no longer allowed to be sold in a retail establishment but at this point but there is a little loop hole! The internet!!! Click on the picture of the necklace below to be linked to an Etsy website that sells these awesome little necklaces. BUT please remember to take these necklaces off your baby when you put them down for a nap. Also do not leave your sweet baby unattended ever and especially with something like a necklace on. I am just starting to use it with my current baby, I did not have one for my first baby and my second baby wore this during all the “safe” times. I will tell you what, we had NO idea our second baby was teething we would just notice that they had more teeth, it was crazy! So I believe in amber necklaces!

Okay so we have dealt with the safe healthy meds and pain relief. Now lets talk about the “work” of teething. Lets have our babies chew on things that they are attracted to, safe for them (meaning not leaching harmful chemicals into their little systems), feel good on their gums, and fun to play with! You can click on each picture to find a link OR if a picture has no link then go to the right hand side of your page and find it in the “I Recommend” box from amazon. It will link you right to the product on the amazon page.

Here is a teething necklace that MOM wears! Chewbeads! I have the Jane Necklace and Cornelia Bracelet. I plan on buying the Hudson Necklace and Charles Bangle soon! These are cute on Mom and solve the problem of baby wanting to chew on Mom’s jewelry AND they are made for teething! I love it when you hit three birds with one stone! HA!

This is a fun teething rattle that my baby loves from a great online company. It is a cornstarch teether from iplay. Read more about it by clicking on the picture below.

There is also the lovely Vulli Sophie Giraffe and she has some other teether friends. I love her and I know my baby does too. She smells slightly funky to me but it atractts baby and it’s all natural and safe! You can click on the “I Recommend” box from on the right side of this page. It will link you right to the product on the amazon page.

There are also these Vulli Vanilla Flavored Ring and Razbaby RaZberry Teether pacifier that my baby loves. The Razbaby has a little hole behind the “berry” part that I fill with water. I then stick the pacifier in the freezer, it’s a soothing “treat” for your sore mouthed babe. You can click on the “I Recommend” box from on the right side of this page. It will link you right to the product on the amazon page.

Well that is basically all that I have done for my kids. I hope this is a great start and helpful for your sweet teething babes!

THE GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.

  1. Great Post Mae!

  2. Great post. I love learning about great teethe

  3. We too love the amber necklaces!! Rey still wears one when her baby teeth start to get loose (and sore) before they fall out!! Also, the mommy of the little guy I watch just ordered a amber anklet…I thought that was a great idea…so that it’s not right around the neck :)
    :)

  4. Jovie and I have matching baltic amber necklaces. :-) She hasn’t worn hers in awhile (praise the Lord teething is over). I wasn’t aware of Oragel’s new natural gel. That’s good news because their original formula is a double-edged sword. Johnny sees babies who come in with tissue burns on their gums from overuse of Oragel. Even use as directed on the package can cause burns. Just what a poor teething little one needs. Great post on alternatives!

  5. I have been looking at those chewbeads necklaces for the future (our first is due this November). I love that they look like something I’d wear normally, but she will be able to chew on.

  6. Oh thank you!! I totally forgot about the amber necklaces and um glad to know there’s a safe orajel product too!! I’m def gonna find myself a cool teething necklace that I can wear for her to chew on! I’ve given up jewelry so that sound like a fun alternative to her breaking my stuff lol!!! :)
